THE AUTOTEKNIK SHOW, JÖNKÖPING SWEDEN January 28-31:
We placed the funny car body on the Bahco stand´s roof, which meant it could
be seen from a far distance. The chassis caught the attention from most
visitors passing the stand and the team Kågered crew performed "pit crew
challenge" show twice daily. |
 |
Our youngest crewmember, Jonas Aldén, is the "diver" mechanic
on both race cars.
Diving in this case, means taking care of the bottom part of the engine.
Among other things, it is Jonas who checks the bearings etc. in between every
run. That alone is an important task that tells us a great deal about the
conditions of the engines.
|
 |
Mechanic Peter "Peppe" Gultheimer is one of our engine guys on
the funny car.
Here Peppe tries out some of the hand tools exposed in the Bahco stand at the
Autoteknik show. |
 |
Funny car crew chief Göran "Emil" Edman also participated at
the Autoteknik show, here pictured in action during one of our crew pit
challenge shows. |

TESTWEEKEND MAY 2003 AT SANTA POD RACEWAY, ENGLAND

This is a rare sight. Niclas Andersson almost alone on the
strip at Santa Pod. No spectators and only a few cars on site. Each year some
of the top teams rents the track and personnel the weekend before the first
race of the season. In this case Niclas needed to testrun the funny car (a car
that was completely new to him) and also to upgrade his license. |
 |
Göran Edman, nicknamed Emil by all of us, is in charge of the
methanol funny car piloted by Niclas Andersson. It is Emil, who ultimately
decides on the overall setup of the car for Niclas next run (fuel system,
clutch etc). Emil has been performing his task with Micke Kågered since 1995
and as statistics show with great success. The driver´s experience of the last
run is always taken into consideration before decisions are made as well as
data from the on board computer and the track- and weather conditions. |
 |
Micke Kågered used some of his time to mount sponsor stickers
on the top fuel dragster before the first race of the season. Normally a race
car only keep the same design for one season, then we start all over again! |
 |
.. and here is another team member on duty.. Mechanic Pär
Evensson is specialised on preparing and maintaining the heads for both cars.
Precautions are taken when we have the time in between races. When a race
event is on, lack of time often means changing heads instead of reparing them
on site if needed. However, normal maintenance is
performed in between every run on both cars. |
 |
Our mechanic Mika Laksela is the clutch man on the funny car.
Here Mika is mounting a new back tyre on the wheel in preparation for the
season opening event. Pictured rear right is one of our clutch men on the top
fueler- Thomas and to the left is our funny car driver Niclas. |
 |
During the races Thomas may be our clutch man on the top
fueler, but in between races all crew members need to be all-round and perform
any task needed.. so neither of us need to get bored as there is always plenty
to do in a two car team. |
 |
Belive it or not.. the team gets hungry once in a while.. Crew
member Åsa Kinnemar prepares all meals in the combined kitchen and lounge area
in the double deck trailer. Meals for 15 people and it takes both planning and
a lot of time to manage the "housekeeping" both before and during the race
events. |
 |
The top fueler is well taken care of as you can see. Here four
of our crew mebers are "pampering" the car. Front left - driver Micke Kågered.
Front right-Mika Laksela Rear left- Thomas Ankarås and rear right- funny car
pilot Niclas Andersson. |
 |
Media relations is an important and frequent task for Micke
Kågered. Here British TV-network Anglia News interviews Micke as a preview to
the season 2003 opening event. The big question was of course how he had
recovered after the bad crash he experienced at Santa Pod sept-02. The answer
was.. luckily very well due to a lot of rest combined with many hours spent at
the fitness center, building up muscles in his injured back. |
 |
What do you do when you are in England, need to transport the
top fueler a short distance, but can not use the truck and trailer? No
problem.. look for yourself how our inventive crew solved the matter! However
we do not want to recommend this technique if you are planning on driving on
public roads! |
 |
.. and so it was time for Niclas last upgrade license run.
Here Thomas straps Niclas into the cockpit. The harness needs to be really
tight and also the arms are strapped so they can not move outside the roll
cage, which could mean a disaster in case of an accident. This is only one of
the many safety regulations in drag racing. |
 |
Now the time has come to fire up the engine. This is something
the driver can not do himself as a loose starter is mounted on the engine
every time, then taken off again as soon as the engine is running. Pictured
are funny car mechanics Mika (left) and Kent (right) together with team
manager Micke Kågered (center), who is monitoring the car and Niclas progess
closely in order to advise Niclas in his driving task. |
 |
It is finally time to go. Niclas has done the burnout, backed
the car in the rubber traces from the burnout and is now ready to slowly move
the car into prestage and stage position before launching. |
 |
.. and the run was a good one completing Niclas funny car
license! The elapsed time was 6.16 seconds. Here at the shut down area at the
end of the track (approximately 1100 meters away from the startline) Niclas is
out of the car, expressing his joy with the ride! Pictured left is mechanic
Peter Gultheimer, who folds the chutes before we can tow the car back to the
pits. |

We
took these photos during the first FIA race event in England May 26-28
Our mechanic Robert spent so many hours
renovating and adjusting the clucthes for the top fuel dragster that
someone made fun of his placing a note on his back, saying "Dr.
Demento - clutch expert" |
 |
Roberts
first event as a clutch mechanic caused the other team members laughter,
since he was completely full with clutch dust all over. This was one of
his cleanest moments.. |
 |
Robert and Bill - the apprentice and the master.
Bill Schultz, who used to manage his own top team in top fuel in the
U.S., came to help Knut Söderqvist tune the dragster Micke Kågered is
driving in 2001. |
 |
We do
try to eat well when we are on the race track and in this case thanks to
Olle doing the barbecue. |
 |
Svecke
is lending a helping hand to sort out the lines for the parachutes.
There are two parachutes on each car, so four of them have to be packed
before every run. |

race event in May
